Confusion for PLANSPONSOR

This was an painting I did for the most recent issue of PLANSPONSOR.  The article was pretty specific...The jist of it is that a benefit plan changed hands a lot of times and lead to legal problems.  I feel like there is a whole genre of images/imagemaking devoted to "weird heads/faces".  Now I'm there too.

Thanks as always to SooJin Buzelli!

Noah Frase

Noah Frase makes pictures that operate in a world somewhere between D&D, Herge, and Andrew Wyeth.  There's something more to what he makes than the pleasing undulation of shapes and lines- his landscapes capture the eeriness of walking through a quiet New England woods-- the creepy woods of childhood/adolescence, filled with the lurking and the unknown, not the benevolent camping/hiking forests of adulthood.

Recently he started a flickr where he posts sketches and odds and ends.  His drawings have taken a turn for autobiography and simplicity, leaning more towards his own brand of observation.  I'm always psyched to check in on what he's been up to.   I really could go on.  He's secretly an excellent painter.  He can draw anything.  Design hides in the webs of spaghetti.  He's the real deal!

'Explosive Growth' For Plansponsor!

For this month's PLANSPONSOR I got to work on a satisfyingly abstract picture on the idea of "Explosive Growth":
I'm pretty psyched on this one, open/abstract solutions like this one dont always work, so when they do I'm usually excited with the results.
Also, in collaborating with AD SooJin Buzelli we discussed something a little more saturated and bright.   The sketch still felt fresh and mysterious(?), so after working on the one above some more, I thought I could give another go painting it out.
The original one was chosen regardless, but I'm still into both of these.  Thanks again to SooJin Buzelli for the challenge!

Nick D'Orazio

Various- Nick D’Orazio, c. 2005
Thought I would post a few (out of hundreds) of my older brother’s MSPaint pictures.  Actual “outsider art” for 2012.  “Pop Surrealism” in a college netherworld.  Secretly articulate and specific.  Vibes, not references, to The Simpsons, S. Clay Wilson, Peter Saul, South Park, etc.

Gonna try and make it a habit of talking about/showing other people whose pictures excite me!

New York Times Letters Section

This was a piece I did for the New York Times letters section about carbon emissions.  It was fun getting to do the whole thing in such a short time, less time for anxieties to seep in.  Here's the article.
Thanks to Alexandra Zsigmond for the art direction!

Broken Pencil Magazine

This was a piece I did for Broken Pencil Magazine for a fiction piece about a woman whose husband gives birth to a little version of himself (and a little recliner and a little T.V. remote) and all the hijinx that ensue.  I liked getting to work with a story. Thanks to Linsday Gibb for getting me on board!

lots of stuff

Here's some of the stuff I've been up to in the past monthish!

Got a new sketchbook, restarting my habit of filling up the inside spread with something.

Felt pretty excited by collage for a little, definitely gonna see what else comes out of it.

Also wanted to try my hand at some really slow pencil drawings.

I've always had an interest for the flowery/baroque compositions of Romanticism, as well as the general idea of this big transcendent force we all grapple with.  I came across this Anne-Louis Girodet de Roussy-Trioson (who I honestly hadnt really heard of before this) painting "Ossian Receiving the Ghosts of French Heroes" (found here) and loved how kind of ridiculous and epi  the composition and idea of it was.  I definitely got the sense of how this might have influenced mainstream comics.  I felt like trying to draw it.

Plansponsor Haus!!!

This was a piece I did for PLANSPONSOR July originally about "risky real estate".  I had a lot of fun working on this one,  it was nice getting to work in a realm that was both a little abstract and straightforward.  Thanks to AD SooJin Buzelli for another fun one!!

Plansponsor and etc.

I did a piece for Plansponsor's April issue about "keeping complex information organized"

This was pretty fun to work on! Thanks to AD SooJin Buzelli for the opportunity!  There are also a bunch of talented artists who were a part of this issue... Like my friends Joohee Yoon , Dadu Shin and Victo Ngai, and artists like Sam Bosma, Chris Silas Neal, Josh Cochran, Red Nose, Irena Zablotska...The list is pretty long!

Here are some other things I've made recently, too
